About the Plant: Grapefruit, also known as Shaddock in certain areas of the world, is a Citrus fruit, whose scientific name is Citrus Paradisi. It is also known by two other scientific names, Citrus Racemosa and Citrus Maxima (named due to their very large size). The history and origin of grapefruit is shrouded in mystery. However, some accounts show that the fruit was first bred in Jamaica. The grapefruit was first described in 1750 by the reverend Griffith Hughes who called it the ‘forbidden fruit’ of Barbados. Later in 1789, Patrick Browne reported it as growing in most parts of Jamaica. It was later on given the name “grapefruit” because it looked like clusters of grapes hanging on trees. Grapefruit is now grown in the U.S, China, India, South Africa and in some South American countries. Like all other citrus fruits, its Essential Oil is present in its peel and extracted by compression. Many of its medicinal properties match those of the essential oils of other citrus fruits.
